How to Pay Off Debt in New Zealand
Debt gets easier the moment you can see all of it in one place. This guide walks through a simple, repeatable plan to clear debt and keep it cleared.

1. List everything you owe
Write down each debt — the balance, the minimum payment and the interest rate. Credit cards, personal loans, Afterpay, car finance and buy-now-pay-later all count. Seeing the total in one list, in NZD, is the part most people avoid — and the part that makes the rest possible.
2. Pick a method and stick to it
The snowball method (smallest balance first) builds momentum with quick wins; the avalanche method (highest interest first) costs you less overall. Either beats switching between them. Pick one, and let the progress keep you going.
3. Free up cash to pay more
Review subscriptions and spending categories in Kiwi Budget Mate and redirect even $20–50 a week extra to your target debt. The minimum keeps you treading water; the extra payment is what actually clears it.
4. Stop adding new debt
An emergency fund of even $1,000 means a car repair or dental bill doesn't go on the credit card. Build the buffer at the same time as you pay down — slow on debt, fast on no-new-debt.
5. Track it until it's gone
Watching balances fall is what keeps momentum through the boring middle. Update each debt balance monthly and celebrate the milestones — the first debt cleared is the hardest, and every one after is faster.
